Researchers say it is all down to differences in the reliance of the sexes on either grey matter or white matter in their brains to solve problems.

They found that in intelligence tests men use 6.5 times as much grey matter as women, but women use nine times as much white matter.

Grey matter is brain tissue crucial to processing information and plays a vital role in aiding skills such as mathematics, map-reading and intellectual thought.

White matter connects the brain's processing centres and is central to emotional thinking, use of language and the ability to do more than one thing at once.

This may help explain why men tend to excel in tasks requiring more local processing, like mathematics and map-reading, while women tend to excel at integrating information from various brain regions, such as is required for language skills.

President of Harvard, Larry Summers: "There are more men who are at the top and more men who are utter failures.
One possible explanation for this is genetics. I?d like to be proven wrong on this one."

This was too much for one of the attendees, Professor Nancy Hopkins. "When he started talking about innate differences in aptitude between men and women, I just couldn?t breathe because this kind of bias makes me physically ill."

But, honestly, what does it say that a leading academic finds the mere positing of an empirical theory of a complex problem something that makes her "physically ill"? And to leap immediately from Summers?s subtle question to the crudest accusations of sexism is a form of emotional blackmail. It?s a sublime example of the left-liberal academy?s preference for feeling over argument.

Steven Pinker: "Look, the truth cannot be offensive. Perhaps the hypothesis is wrong, but how would we ever find out whether it is wrong if it is ?offensive? even to consider it? People who storm out of a meeting at the mention of a hypothesis, or declare it taboo or offensive without providing arguments or evidence, don?t get the concept of a university or free inquiry."

Kuten Steven Pinker saoo, totuus ei voi olla loukkaava. Hypoteesi voi toki olla väärä. Linkitetään tässä sitten saman aiheisen postauksen kommenttiosastoon, jossa naiset suuttuvat vääristä hypoteeseista. Lainaus:

Hypoteesi: Jos henkilö suuttuu erilaisten hypoteesien edessä, hänet pitäisi julistaa kyvyttömäksi harjoittamaan objektiivista tiedettä, koska suuttuminen johtaa hänet helposti liian subjektiiviseen tapaan tarkastella ongelmia omiin mielipiteisiinsä nojautuen.
